AI Is Already Changing How Candidates Compete
New research from the Staffing Industry Analysts shows that nearly half of UK job seekers are now using AI as part of their job application process.
This signals a clear shift in candidate behaviour. AI is becoming standard practice for tailoring CVs, preparing for interviews and increasing application velocity.
For recruiters, that means the “baseline” quality and consistency of applications has already moved.
Adoption will vary by industry
The headline figure matters, but it won’t apply evenly across the market.
We’d expect higher AI usage in professional services and technology, where candidates are digitally fluent and written positioning plays a significant role in selection.
By contrast, frontline, shift‑based and heavily regulated sectors are likely to see lower adoption (at least for now).
The result is a widening gap in candidate behaviour depending on sector, role type and seniority.
AI raises the bar, but it doesn’t replace humans
Interestingly, candidates still show a preference for human‑led recruitment and remain cautious about over‑automation. That reinforces a critical point that AI is shaping the inputs into recruitment, not replacing judgment.
The differentiator will be how effectively recruiters interpret, validate and act on AI‑assisted data.
What this means for recruitment businesses
As candidates move faster with AI, recruitment businesses must do the same without losing control.
AI will expose weaknesses in fragmented systems, manual workflows and inconsistent processes. Without strong governance, data quality suffers and trust diminishes.
AI is accelerating both sides of hiring. The systems recruiters rely on must be built to keep up.
